What's Your Favorite Sleep Position?

To sleep, of course!
How many of us can identify whether we are a side, back or stomach sleeper?
And how many of us have been told the benefits or negatives about how we sleep?
Well, let’s dispel some of those myths and help you to get a better night’s sleep.
First off, researchers identify 3 types of sleeping positions – side, back and stomach. Sleep specialists agree that side sleeping is the best in terms of the most restorative and uninterrupted sleep. It is said that twice as many women as men sleep in this position. There are even different side positions that will help certain body aches and pains. Sleeping on the side with the knees pulled slightly toward the chest, referred to as the fetus position, can help alleviate insomnia and chronic sleep deprivation. Adding a pillow between your knees can help to alleviate some back pressure.
Many doctors recommend this position for those who suffer from chronic back or hip pain, as well as for pregnant women because it takes the pressure off these parts of the body. Sleeping on your side with arms at your sides and body straight is called the “log position” and researchers believe that 15% of people sleep in this position. A third side sleeping position, the "yearner," is when you sleep on your side with arms stretched out in front of you.
Sleeping on your back may help to keep the neck, head and shoulders in a more neutral position. However, this is often where you find the snorers. This is because the airway is most open and unobstructed. Some dermatologists say this is the best sleeping position to fight wrinkles because there is nothing pushing against your face. If you’re a back sleeper, make sure to use a supportive pillow!
And if you are a stomach sleeper … we’ve got some bad news. This isn’t a good position to sleep in because it puts unnecessary pressure on your back and neck. Those who sleep on their stomach are often more restless and have the tendency to toss and turn in their sleep to find a comfortable position.
While there are benefits to each type of sleep position, it’s a unanimous vote that side sleeping is best. And the Luma Mattress can help you get an even better night’s rest.
